Parlar d'amore parlare forte - Strong love words

Scroll down for English version - thanks!
Prossimo post/next post  Monday/Lunedì December 12th

 English version

Maslow clarified it long ago: esteem needs are not just strong and powerfull, but almost at the top of the pyramid of needs. Chapman put it in a different way: love should also talk with support words. In our experience boys are much more sensible to this language than girls, especially in these last years. Now, why this language is so important and how can we talk it with kids and teens (and spouses too!).
Words of affirmations are the raw material to build self estimate: I cannot esteem and value myself if what I notice is contempt, rejection, delusion.
It is weird: our society is mainly anti-Gauss. The curve of behavior is not at all similar to the Gaussian distribution  but presents large excess at the extremities. We believe this is true also for self-estimate. There are families which cultivate the self-estimate of their children with such a dedication that they end up producing…. arrogance, with serious consequences; and there are families which do not care at all the self-value of their children, tend to apply an old approach based on the over-signal of limits and weaknesses with the result of growing weak, fragile and rebel children. Because there is diabolic link between frailty and violence: as a sort of revenge, feeble and dull personalities tend to blow up madly like Michael Douglas in the famous movie Falling Down .
Words of affirmation are there to show trust, respect, expectations. And thus conveying a very clear and endearing message: we care! You are so important to us! You’re not just a dark shape moving in the back, just at the border of our eyesight: you are in our hearths and we want you to know that you are relevant.
Now, how can we speak this language? Is it enough to recognize something well done?
That’s important, that’s a great step but just one of the possibilities you can manage.
Here some other examples of words of affirmation:
With kids (inserire elenco puntato)

  • Love and tenderness words: don’t save them! You could find no other chance to spend them. Tell them you love them, you like them, tell them what you like about their look (hair, nose, eyes…)
  • Praise words: encourage them, always. Point out what they have done, thanks them for their results (thanks for helping me clearing the table, laying cloths…) but be sincere: casual, cool and unfounded praises are harmful, they are easily perceived as false and mechanical. Do not exaggerate too: praise should be a reward, not a daily food that need to survive.
  • Support words  Support means inspire (or infuse) courage, bravery. This is what everyone need to try again, to push the limit one step forward: in one word to improve. Without support there is little chance and room for improvement. Valuate the efforts, the partial results. Side your kids in their labors, stay there, help them without taking their place: they need inspiration, support, not a replacement. Doing something for them, after having asked them to do something, convey a very clear and harsh message: you are not able to do this.
  • Leading words walk the talk. Haven’t you noticed that what your children, since they are kids, get immediately from you? Bad habits! Shouting is one of your weakness? They shout too! If you are used not to listen to people, to cut them off, guess what they tend to do? Interrupting! So, when you point out rules and codes, strive for leaving applying the same rules and codes. Walk the talk and you will surround them with leading words.

In your experience which other words of affirmation can work? Which ones can't and why? How can you be sure this is the preferred language of your kids?
What can be done with teens and spouse too?
