Intervista a/Interview with Anna Talò

Questi i dati oggettivi.

E' fatica sprecata.

Anna Talò is an extraordinaryl woman. She is a journalist and a writer, and she is very active on the web where her daily comments are intriguing and profound. She recently wrote a book for hectic women from which we took the hint for this interview.

Where did your book comes from?
It’s a long story. I’ve been always puzzled by the human brain and how it works. We are often surprised by our own deeds. That’s because we do not know they are just natural response to a precise stimulus. The brain is actually like a computer: it works the way it has been planned. There are instincts and there are habits. These last ones allow us to act without real conscience.  The problem raises from the fact that the brain cannot distinct facts: cleaning up the table can be the same that going on with the same destructive behaviors that can mess with relationships. So when we are puzzled by the fact that it looks like we are used to find out harmful people, well we have to blaim our brain because… we are actually looking for those people. We need to be aware of ourselves to avoid hurting ourselves.
Why women are always in a hurry?
I believe it depends on our specific historical situations. Even though they work in an office, women want to take care personally of the household. And men uses to attack women saying that they have become like men, that they are aggressive and challenging.  As a consequence we search for perfection. I personally live alone in a very small apartment. I can cook.  I feel no pain in delegating some jobs, like going to the bak, but I feel upset if I have to delegate the housekeeping. And I do not even have husband or kids to blame me for it!

Why do you suggest meditation as a solution to that?
Many studies suggest that any kind of meditation can reduce the level of stress. My joke is that if you can really step out from what you are doing, become aware of what you are doing, you kind find your way to overcome problems.  My book is not just a manual about techniques. It is also a meditation on our life and on the charges that we are facing to fulfill the social expectations that hurt us. None of us could never be perfect! We have to cope with this.

Which are the main issues that women face and which the main challenges?

“We can do it”. Never fail. The level of women occupancy in Italy is one of the lowest in Europe. Women who want to work have often to accept low quality jobs. And with limited employement because they can become pregnant and therefore you need to fire them easily. Thus they are usually poorer than men. These are facts. I can add the sindrom of perfection, as I mentioned before.

Which could be three suggestions you woiuld like to give to our readers?

a)    Cope with your limits.  Understand and be aware of what you really are can help you a lot.
b)   Smile and laugh. Often. Even when you see no reasons. This has a huge impact on your mood.
c)    Give up. This is what Michael J. Fox used to answer to those asking him “how can you handle you disease?”. He did not mean to avoid doing anything, actually he create a foundation to fight Parkinson. What he meant was to avoid fighting ghosts.

Come è potuto accadere?
Sempre. In ogni circostanza.

I’ve been hit by an article I read recently on Mamma Imperfetta (imperfect mother) web page. It’s about gratitude. Actually a goods quite rare. Gratitude, explains the nameless author is ackowledgment, is  being aware of the precious gifts received, is the capability to appreciate details. It’s an art due to other people around us.
And is difficult to teach. Nowadays it seems that the word “thank you” is quite an unknown expression for many kids. They tend to believe that everyone is there to give them what they want and that this is not a gift but an act of profound love and generosity.
How comes?
I tend to believe that the reason is that we forgot what humility is. Of course in some way it’s the greatest virtue, the founding one. And in this case it means the awareness that we depend from other. Always, Everywhere. In any way.
I’m not saying that we cannot be autonomous, which is different from being independent: what I mean is that we have unbreakable links with  other people, and if you believe with God.
And that we are not the center of the universe.
This shift is needful if we want start teaching gratitude, and since it’s an attitude more than a behavior –of course gratitude is expressed through acts- we need to teach it by example.
Do you have any suggestion how?

Bullies' parents - Genitori bulli?

E per dire no, per dire tanti "no!".
E voi che cosa ne pensate?

Recently an Italian opinion maker launched a provocation on an Italian newspaper about the deterioration of parents. He claimed that parents are the principal cause of the multiplication of bullies. Quoting a teacher he affirmed that parents are playing nowadays the role of trade unions for their sons. An the role of trade unions in Europe and Italy is well known.
He argues that parents have to be abolished because they are miseducating their kids teaching them that they are allowed to do everything and just financing them.
Of course he knows very well that he is provoking to wake us up and that the situation is not so bad. Having said so I do agree with him, with his approach. I do believe that we, parents, have mistaken what love should be and that we are not there to satisfy and justify everything that our kids want or do, but to help them to sculpt their personality while understanding what is good and what is evil. And to say no.
What do you think about?

Ne abbiamo già in parte scritto qualche post fa  focalizzandoci però sull’atteggiamento del ritorno a casa d mogli e mariti.

English version

Last Saturday Franca has been invited to talk about the main differences between women and men. A subject that seems to be so intriguing that everyone want to know about, maybe just to rationalize what’s happening daily in their family. The most discussed subject, and the one which caused a lot of fun and laughs, was “the control of the house order”. We already wrote something about a couple of post ago, although in that article we focused on the homeward bound approaches.
It seems that women cannot tolerate a house but perfect and tidy, even methodical. And everything that confuse this perfection must be ranged immediately. Someone remembered me a very common situation: when you come back from vacation, there is practically no discontinuance between the moment you off load the luggage from the car and the moment that the washing machine starts her first washing cycle! Isn’t it true?
The reason can be a biochemical one, as the hormones theory from John Gray suggests. But we are not just animals, we are persons and we know that love, which is a verb and not a feeling, requires sacrifices. And taking care of others, which is a noble attitude and one of the highest possible offering suggested by true love, requires that others desire and appreciate what we are doing for them. To avoid the risk of being affected by another syndrome, the martyr’s one: “I spent my life doing things to you and you never thanks me!”. You surely know about.
So Franca answered simply to a lady asking “what we have then to do?”.
It all depends on your goal: you want to take care of your family or strive to win the title of “Miss Splendid Kitchen”?
Which is the goal of our actions then?

Slightly the same – Una differenza sottile

E danneggiare i figli.

English version

Sometime words differ for such a small aspect that you tend to mistake them, and this can cause a lot of collateral damages. Of course, since I’m Italian I can find easier this oddity in Italian terms. I was surprised and conquered by a friend of mine long ago when, talking about education, he came out with this little story of his kid who, coming back home from school, seemed to be unable to place his bag at the right place. And when mom or dad remind him to arrange his stuff he was used to answer “I know, I know”. Now his father came out with this simple and powerful answer: “you do not have to say I know, rather I do”.
This is an example of mistakes we often do mistaking knowledge for action. And we tend to have the same approach with our kids.
The second one, which can be a much bigger and devastating mistake is to mix up desire and need, or better say “what they want, what they need”. They = our kids.
We too often are temped to give them what they want, which as much often is not what they need. Need something requires a goal, while wanting can just be a silly maggot.
When you do need something? When you try to reach a goal and you find an obstacle in front of you. Now, which is the goal you envision for your kids?
I believe the answer is in a sentence I found quoted by Elena Frigoli, whom we interview some time ago, “parents should not prepare the way for their kid, rather their kid for the way”.
Don’t you agree?

Homeward bound - Tornando a casa

Prossimo post Next post

English version

It’s weird and somehow reassuring  when you find depicted in wise books what you an taste and feel in your daily life. So for this last post-in-a-row let’s give a look of the differences between women and men when they came back home.  It can be funny if you are not personally involved in the matter or quite dramatic if you are caught up in the situation.
Actually when men come back home they all seem affected by the syndrome of the returning warrior. You can figure it our easy, my dear readers, like an ancient crusader finally docking home after a long fight. He waits for honors, cheers, cuddles, and of course rest. A long  undisturbed rest in front of the TV or reading his preferred newspaper, better sipping a glass of wine or water.
And what about a lady coming back home? Well, first of all she feels guilty as soon as she open the door and she steps in. Why? Because she suffers from the fact that she feel like a traitor, and please note that I’m not at all saying she is a traitor : I’m just stating a fact which is quite usual.  So she usually start doing a lot of things trying to involve in her hectic efforts the resting warrior. With mostly unspeakable effects and collateral damages.
Neither of these behavior, although being quite common, can be considered right neither correct. But unfortunately they are natural.
And with naturally I mean that they derive directly from the nature of manhood and womanhood. As our friend John Gray explain in his book, the one we are reading together, it’s a question of hormones: men need to recharge them through a quite rest, women tend to refill their tank taking care of others.
Problems arise when both pretend the other to act the same way they are doing.
What’s the essence of this post? An alibi for both, especially men? A suggestion for a dry patience? Not at all. We’d like to suggest changes of behaviors stemming from awareness. That can include patience and efforts: ladies do not aggress your request of help, husbands raise quickly from your coma or defer the issue of  recovery and, acting as SuperHusband, solve the emergency problem that your wife is facing.
And please, my dear ladies, do not exaggerate in pretending order, just to avoid the case sharply, and cruelly described on a apron we bought in New York City: “a clean house is the sign of a wasted life”.

Il dialogo Marziano - The Martian dialogue

Dobbiamo quindi fare affidamento sulle nostre esperienze.
Ci potete aiutare?

English version

Let’s go on exploring the Venus-Mars conflictual relation as John Gray describes it in his book. We introduced the Venusian dialogue some post ago and we have been required to provide a similar insight for the other side of the couple. How a man like to discuss?
I have to say that John Gray in his book does not address this subject directly, the chapter that mirror the Venusian dialogue talks about the need of men to be feel like a superhero, Mister Emergency, the “impossible mission” situation where the bravery and energy of an uncommon man can solve the problem and clean the kitchen before guests arrive.
So we have to rely on our experience. We star with ours, and please add yours so that we can come up with a real picture in the end.
We do believe that men, more than be involved in a Martian dialogue, prefer to state their position. So if you want to help a man to share his thoughts start asking questions that show that you require his help to solve a problem.
“What do you think about”, “which is you position in this”, “what would you do…” seems to be nice starting point.
Since men are more chained to logic and reasoning, help them to develop their point through questions that force to provide rationale. Possibly do not tackle emotion in the beginning. Men have difficulties in explaining emotions and being caught can provoke sharp reactions. You can ask some questions later on, when men have recharged their testosterone tank thanks to your request of support.
And now it’s up to you: did you face similar situations or your experience differs from what we have described? Can you help us?
