Weird encounters. I’ve been asked to talk about how the present crisis affect the work-family life balance and I ended up suggesting to give tasks to kids in order to prepare them to the unevenness that life will eventually offer them and also to teach that you need to contribute to your family life. I face the fierce resistance of a grandmother who, with a lot of severe elegance, told me that she strongly disagreed with what I said and that she stoutly believes that kids should not be oppressed with duties and tasks.
Let’s think about. I believe here there is a major point to discuss.
Which is the goal of both positions and which will be the consequences of these two different approaches to life and education.
I believe the lady want to preserve her two nephews, smooth out the path for them, avoid any coarseness, any pain from their life. I can understand. It’s a dream we all have: for us and for our kids.
But life is different. It’s not a nice stroll in a wonderful garden in a mild climate rich of sunshine. It’s much more close to a quest in a wild forest where you have to cut your path in a tangle of thorny bush fighting against mosquitoes in wet and hot conditions. And it’s raining all the time.
So protect kids that way will just have one consequence: forward them the wrong idea that they do not have to work hard in life, that will have all they want in a click, that someone will always provide them any solution.
Is that what we want?
Surely not. But sometime we do not consider the link between what we want and how we act.
How could we overcome this inconsistency?

A lot of confusion - azione o confusione?

I met a group of nursery school teachers (taking care of babies from 2 to 5 years old) to discuss about how they can help parents in their tough duty.
It seems that the new generation of parents are quite confused about what they have to do –I mean operational stuff, methodology- and some of them, let’s say the most part, paradoxically quite firm on what and why should be done. Usually, and unfortunately, they are even much more confused about that. And therefore jeopardize the future of their kids.
My question is why on earth that happened? Why these new parents are so confused to believe that anything that make their kids a sort of tyrant will in the end produce a good citizen and represents the best educational methodology?
I fear that the answer could be in the challenge that education obliges to face: educate our kids actually means and implies to take responsibility. We have to decide what is good and what is not for our kids. Even much more undeniable and challenging: we have to decide what is good what is evil. Therefore we need to have a clear idea of what that means in our lives, what in the end good is, and live our life accordingly.
This is why we end up just trying to solve the “how can I” questions. Much more easy to stick to the action plan.
Unfortunately no action plan can provide a meaning and without a true founding meaning no action plan can be planned: why should I be firm and send my kid to bed at the time we have established? If he starts moaning why should I not concede what he’s asking for, therefore winning his smile for me?
Now the problem is: how can we reprogram this society with new values, that can be the old ones, that can save us from confusion and in the end dissolution?
Versione Italiana
