The parents' war - La guerra dei sessi
Roomeeffoc Thursday
The provoking post
Giovedì Roomeeffoc
La provocazione per riflettere
I'd like to repost one of our first articles, under the cover of Roomeeffoc, and we decided to do so because we believe than in these last two years the problem increased and increased. So let's try to talk again about it and drop the bomb.

Some weeks ago I talked to a large group of parents, whose babies are less than three years old. I introduced the role of the father, why and what it’s important and what a father has to do. Everyone agreed, even moms. And than… boom. A young father affirmed his agreement in theory, denying theory could become reality because of wondermoms. That what he said: there are too much wondermoms around, preventing fathers to take their role, building borders around children, confining fathers in their offices, far from home, far from the heart of the family.
Is that true? Are we in the middle of the moms-dads war?
It is quite evident that the true weaker sex is… man. And we are weaker firstly because we claim not to be.
Let’s say it clearly: women are truly stronger. They can resist pain and suffering much better than men, and longer. They are used to patience and resistance. They can do what a man does, if they want. Men can’t. They have, nowadays, a much strong personality, a firmer determination, a more solid and healthy will. To build on this women also have a clearer capacity to plan their life: men tend to be more focused on the present escaping moment than on their future life. It is much more likely to find male than female adult teens.
We, the men, weaker and weaker, we have been pushed in a corner by women. Especially in the family. What started in the end of last century, the deconstruction of the role of the father –can you remember, in those ugly novels, the mother pointing the tired father, eating after a long and hard day in the mine, to the sun shouting “you have to study if you do not want to become like your father!”?- reached the goal with the end of the XX century and we are now discovering how wrong it was.
Let’s be clear: men are guilty. We are not trying to hide responsibility. We, men, liked that role of bread-feeder: we could stay away from family problems, children issues, just absorbed in our heroic job, a sort of an old warrior not fighting dragons or ogres but figures and markets. If it was a trick, we bought it!
And then, when it became clear that women could easily overcome us even in the workplace we couldn’t find out another place where to go, another role to play. We just keep on fighting to defend our borders and our land.
But the family was gone. Unfortunately, since nature doesn’t like tricks, children were gone too.
As many authors claim you cannot just delete the father from the family. You can find more details in these interesting posts, which are different from the ones you can find in the italian session pointing to italian articles and websites.
Now. That’s the situation. So what?
How comes that fathers cannot fight back to defend their role, which in the end is not a privilege but a duty? How come that fathers cannot stand their wives claims?
How can this big problem be solved? What are your thoughts and suggestions on this subject?
Testo in italiano
Ci stiamo drammaticamente rendendo conto dell’errore commesso.
E’ troppo tardi?

Famiglia vuol dire fiducia - Everybody need somebody to trust

Fino a settanta volte sette.

What is trust in the family?
I found a book about trust, written by Stephen M.R. Covey. It’s mainly about trust in business, but some good suggestions can be used in education too. Because trust is the same things everywhere. Well, actually what is trust? I asked this questions to my Facebook and Twitter friends and got a lot of smart and sharp answers. The one I liked the most is not really a definition of trust, but something even deeper: trust is an investment.
You invest in your spouse and in your children. And they invest in you.
When you invest you expect a return.
What does this mean in a family? What is the ROI in a family?
Little children expect predictability and accountability. They expect that you take care of them, that you protect them, they you fulfill your promises. The theologian Scott Hahn once defined God as the Father who fulfills His promises. Sounds good to me.
This is what a parent should do: fulfill the promises to love his/her children. These last want to know that they won’t be hurt, hit, belittled, mocked, betrayed. They want to know that they will be appreciated for what they are, not for what they do.
We, the parents, have to help them realize their potential, their gifts. We have to work hard on this because very often this talents are well hidden, especially when they are teens and they seem to do their best to hid their talents to us.
We need to figure out they are much better than what they look like to help them develop their personality and their gift. We have to give them trust to win back the trust they once give us for free and now seems to deny.
And with your spouse? Same thing. When we felt in love we could just see the wonder, then we learnt to discover also the weaknesses. We should not be trapped by these ones: quite often nowadays the discovery of the dark side implies despair and someone gives up, convinced that her/his spouse won’t never changed. It’s out duty to trust him/her and be there to help.
The present society makes us sometime very fragile, bended over ourselves: it seems we just can see our personal short-term interests. We are in some way like blind unable to see the future. Trust should help us not to give up and try again, and again, and again. Seventy times seven. This is why without trust no family can stand.
What do you think? What do you actually do to enhance your trust? Could you share your experience with us?
