It’s the same old story: love can be easily used as a trick to avoid responsibility.

Think a minute about it: how many times we decline to act as we should do claiming that we deny our duties for the sake of someone or something?

We came also to the point of lying claiming that there are some good lies, pure lies, nice lies that we have to say to protect other people.

What could just be a irrelevant social sin, becomes a devastating fault when applied to the family.

A parent should be a parent and play his/her role with awareness and responsibility. We would avoid to send our children to the analyst if we accepted our duty and were strong enough to lead them!

Now, how this become a daily life in a family?

Two are the mistakes that could happen more frequently, following Mariolina Migliarese’s recent article published in the November issue of Fogli:

1.     believing that the kid uses our same reasoning structure to approach reality,
2.     avoiding to be firm enough to say no and set rules when required, which is almost always.

How comes that these two mistakes could almost daily happen un our families? It’s simple: let’s say that our kid is behaving in a terrible way, doing something unacceptable.

How many times do we respond with a long argument, try to win the agreement of the kid, instead of just affirming what should be done?

So we tend to use wordy homily to change his attitude, to win his accord while asking for his point of view, instead of asserting what is right and what is wrong.

Mariolina explains that kids tend to understand the surrounding world starting from themselves and from their short-storied experience. And they thus end up reading the wordy and over-dialogical adult approach as a sign of weakness. Where an adult believes that explaining and reasoning could win a stronger agreement and long-term attitude the child assumes that he won the battle with his parent.
But this apparent win hides also a very strong fear: the dread of having being abandoned. If my parents are not stronger than me, how could they protect me from the evil?

The immediate consequences are easy to guess: the kid will try to handle everything by himself, which of course is a task he cannot accomplish. That’s one of the main reason of anger, rage, violent behaviors.

Which is one of the most popular reaction of parents nowadays? Far from start playing their role, they tend to take the boy and bring him to a therapist claiming for psycho-disorders that cannot handle.

What should they do instead: be firm, be strong, set rules, accept to be unpopular, chose to lead, control, rule even not explaining with details and rational every decision.

We are not suggesting to be a tyrant, neither to impose one’s will in un unreasonable way.

But when your little kid try to plug his little finger into the dangerous plug, would you tell him the whole story of electromagnetism or would you act immediately avoiding the risk?

Now the point is: why parents seems to have lost the art of steadiness? What do you think?

Avete idee? Suggerimenti? O non la pensate come noi?

The little girl, she’s twenty-six months old, seems to be quite sick: she vomits twice in less than fifteen minutes. It’s the viral ‘flu, the teacher thinks, that is widespread in town. So she calls the mother, following the procedure: “Little Jane is sick, she’s vomiting: could you come and pick her up?”. “That’s wired”,  answers her mom, let’s say a layer on her best thirties, “she was so happy and felt so good this morning that we went having breakfast in a bar and she finally got that espresso she was asking for since a long time!”.
Now, she got an espresso because she was asking for since a long tie? What about is with the coffee she asked also for a cigarette? Why not? Why don’t applying the same approach?
What seems to be a joke, and unfortunately it is not, actually is one of the major problem of the education process. Moms and dads getting mad.
We are living an age that could be defined as the kids tyranny: the power seems to be firmly hold by this little savages, imposing their wild will, setting rules and getting more and more selfish.
What do parents have in mind when they say that mom will stop breastfeeding her kid until when (s)he will decide so. Is that a kind  of decision a kid could reasonably take?
What do parents have in mind when they say that the kid will go on wearing and using a napkin until (s)he wants to: is that a kind of decision a kid should reasonably take?
What’s happening? Why do moms and dads, which can no way be described as dull or naïve or wicked, people who are used to take tough decisions daily at works, end up being tyrannized and overpowered by little kids still unable to talk?
Two main provoking reasons. As you know, we love to use harsh words just to wake up our brains and heat up discussion. So, let’ be rude, very rude:
1)   they don’t care about their children: having one is what they wanted, never considered raising it up. Stuff comes with instructions, and when we got tired, let’ throw away. So, don’t let him/her bother us: let’s just do what they want and don’t care.
2)   They do care too much, but they tend to take feeling for love. Love is not a feeling, it’s love is an action plan. So they tend to mistake what they want with what they need, and that’s a very dangerous point. Parents have to give to their children what they need, not necessary what they ask for, which usually may not be what they deserve and lack to grow.
Now what? Which could be the causes and which the solutions for this problems?
Do you have ideas? Suggestions? Doubts?

I miei lettori spesso intervengono in tutti i post.

Bismama is a virtual entity, a undefined foggy blogger whose borders are shaded.
From her posts we can figure out a concrete and active woman, romantic and lively, truly wise, gifted with such a sharpness that never stop in front of challeges: on the contrary, she tends to sweep obstacles not attacking them, but applying lateral thinking she turns around them brilliantly.

Young, she is 28 and she’s mother of two and these are the only bio details we are allowed to know.
In our imagination she’s charming, sprightly eyed, open smile, warm but also… like Monnalisa’s one.

Brown haired, for sure: you can guess it from the colors she uses in the posts of her acute blog Bismama 2.0

Where you can read about her family, but you wonder if everything is true: because the art and freedom of her posts, her ability of picking up clues here and there, her amiable trait, her politically incorrectness, her sharp blade, all this stuff makes you think that Bismama 2.0 could really be a team of screenwriters.
Let’s listen to what she answered to our questions

How you got the idea of your family blog?
Well, actually I won’t define mine a family bog. It’s much more like a personal blog, a place where I can pour and share my thoughts, my doubts, my ideas. It’s a sort of observatory from where I can look at our Familylife. I’m a long time net surfer and although I pretend to be an honest and sincere person, I believed that a blog could be a open square where I could shout all my emotions unlinked to my face. My blog is rigorously anonym and this fact let me free.

Which are the subjects that your reader like the most and why?
Wow: got no idea! My readers use to comment almost every post: some of my articles fire more comments, I believe because they are more profound and challenging, other make them lough instead of write back. I tend to believe that they are interested in all of them because we are always talking about life in the end. About real life. Actually about my life.

Which are the issues that seems to worry the most today’s parents?
I believe that what worry the most is how we could pass on them our values so that they could make the best choice, telling good from evil. The Italian situation does not support us in this difficult task. (and my question for the reader is: what about what’s happening in your your country?)

Your three suggestions for the best family

I do not think to be entitled for answering this questions. I believe to be the least one. I believe that a family is a good family when it’s an happy family. And you cannot build happiness, you can prepare the ground for it. And my opinion the couple is the foundation: if husband and wife goe well together, everything it’s ok. If they don’t or even they start fighting, no suggestions will help the family.

Intervista a Rebecca Cousins - Interview with Rebecca Cousins

Prossimo post Next post Thrusday/Giovedì 23 dicembre

3. Ascoltate davvero i vostri figli.

Rebecca Cousins is the Owner of Freckles Crafts, a company specializing in unique craft kits for kids.  She is also the mom of two funny, sweet, wild, and loving boys and wife to her husband of 11 years.  When Rebecca isn’t busy running a house and a business she enjoys reading, crafting and spending time with friends and family.   For more information about Rebecca Cousins and Freckles Crafts, please visit her website at or follow us on Facebook  and Twitter.  You can also visit her newly released blog, Crafting With Freckles, for free craft tutorials, recipes, giveaways and more!  We warmly suggest a visit Chez Rebecca for more details.

Rebecca is an example of the work-at-home-moms you can find on the web. It's a interesting alternative for those mothers that want to share their creativity in a business environment while staying close to their kids.  We discussed it previously on famigliefelici where several moms left powerful comments.
In our chat with Rebecca we tried not just to discuss the parenting side of her activity but to develop the entrepreneur one so to provide clues and ideas to our readers.
Just before listening to what Rebecca said, let's remember that we already met and interviewed a web-mom: Shara Lawrence-Weiss

You are a work at home mom:  why did you make this choice, what are the advantages of your choice?

"Shortly after the birth of my first son I was laid off from work.  I had a background in marketing and rather than go back to a traditional 9-5 job, I decided to work from home and start my own business as a Marketing Consultant.  This allowed more flexibility in my schedule and the ability to spend more time with my son.  After the birth of my second son, and my oldest son now two years old, I found it more difficult to balance my work/home life, but I continued to work as a consultant for another four years.  During this time I realized while I was in a career that allowed some use of my creativity, I was not following the passion that I had for crafts and working with my hands.  It was at that point that I stopped taking any new marketing clients and focused solely on the startup of my company Freckles Crafts!   While it has been a lot of hard work, the benefits of owning my own company have been amazing.  Not only do I get to do something that I love every single day, it is a wonderful feeling to know my craft kits are bringing so much joy to kids and assist in making the crafting experience an enjoyable one for parents.  Being my own boss, working from home (in PJ’s if I like!), and having a flexible schedule that allows me to have more family time and be available when my kids need me are just icing on the cake!"

How difficult was it to create your own business?

"It took me nearly a year to get Freckles Crafts off the ground.  I had absolutely no retail business experience, so it was quite a challenge for me to figure out where to begin.  I spent hours and hours researching packaging options, safety regulations of products for kids, vendors from whom I could purchase high quality and safe supplies, shipping options and various pricing structures for my products.  I also had to get very creative with my marketing budget, and traditional forms of advertising (i.e. print, radio, etc.) were not going to fit into the early stages of my marketing plan.  While I had been in marketing for years, social media was never my area of expertise as most of my clients focused on print media.  I had to quickly learn the ropes of Facebook and Twitter and also how to start blogging!  While it was very difficult and overwhelming at times, I feel as though taking my time to really study each area of my business has made me more successful in running my company.  I feel very proud of everything I have accomplished since the launch of my company in March of 2010 and I look forward to what the future holds for Freckles Crafts".

Which kinds of families usually contact you and your blog?

"My craft kits are designed for busy parents of children ages three and older who would like to craft with their children but may not have the time to search out all of the supplies needed to create each craft or who may be overwhelmed by the idea of having to come up with a craft idea to make.  I find a lot of the visitors to my website are parents and grandparents who are looking for something convenient to keep on hand and be able to pull out at a moment’s notice.  I also have a newly released blog where parents can get free craft tutorials, recipes, and creative inspiration for those occasions when they may have more time to plan creative activities for their children.  Recently I have seen an increase in sales to parents who are purchasing craft kits for birthday parties as an on hand activity and/or in lieu of goody bags!"

In which way do you believe crafts can help a child’s development?

"Crafting is an important part of a child’s healthy development, and by encouraging your kid’s creativity you are helping to build a wide range of life skills.  Not only are crafts great for building fine motor skills and visual, spatial development (i.e. working with scissors, stringing beads, drawing), but crafting can also improve a child’s skills in planning and completion of tasks, concentration, and imagination.  Crafts are also very important in assisting with social development, as well as a feeling of success and self worth!"

What do you perceive as concerns for US families?

"Unfortunately I think the average US family has a lot of concerns right now; the economy, job loss, and decline in  property values  just to name a few.    With that said, I feel that one of the biggest concerns among families today is education.  Many of our nation's public schools are falling behind in the areas of literacy, math and science.  The US is not able to keep up with other countries in academics, and the fear is that our children will not be able to compete in a global marketplace in the future.  I believe many parents are deciding to take their children’s education into their own hands by choosing to home school rather than send their children to public school.  I work with a lot of parents of homeschooled children who purchase craft kits to use as part of their lesson plans in the subjects of literacy, math and home economics.   In addition, they are using the craft kits to teach an arts and crafts component to enrich their child’s education, one of the many benefits of homeschooling as art programs are continuing to be cut in public schools due to budget constraints.
It is going to take a lot of work to change the education system in this country and while there is a movement working toward reform, unfortunately it is going to be a long process and not fast enough for so many of the children who are currently in school".

As a parent, what are three suggestions you can give to our readers on how to be a better family

"1. Have fun with your family!  Make a weekly family date.  In an age where most families have both parents working outside of the home and kids participating in multiple extracurricular activities, it is important for families to spend quality time together.  The key to achieving this is to set a family date night once a week.  This night is non-negotiable, is reserved only for family members, and nothing else should be scheduled during this time.  It is important to find activities that all family members enjoy and it is important to get your kids input so they feel included in the decision making.  Spending quality time together will allow everyone to reconnect and keep the lines of communication open between parents and children.
2. Make children a priority but not your entire life.  I think as parents we give so much to our children that we often lose touch with ourselves and what makes us happy.  Taking time for yourself or with your spouse will not only make you happy but will also help to make you a better parent.  If you don’t nourish yourself then you will not have as much to give your children.
3. Really listen to your children.  Children want to feel like they have a voice in the family and when they feel like they are not being heard frustration can build and unnecessary arguments can occur.  Even the youngest of children can communicate through sound, touch, eye contact, hand motions and sign language".
