Is teaching a duty? Ma dobbiamo proprio educare?

Scroll down for English version - thanks!
Prossimo post/next post  Domenica/Sunday  July 3rd

Perché dovremmo educare i figli?
C’è un diritto all’educazione?
Glielo dobbiamo.
Quindi dobbiamo imparare come educare, come insegnare.
E’ nostro dovere.

Why do we have to teach kids? We posted three articles on teaching virtues:
and suddenly this question came to our minds. Is there the duty to teach? Is there a right to teach? Or should kid be let free to learn from themselves what life is? We should not teach them to avoid influencing them and in some way manipulating them.
Are these silly questions? Don’t think so. First because some pedagogical theories are just build on the answer that actually we should not at all educate our kids, who will discover from themselves their way through the world. Freedom is the main value and thus we should let free to take decisions.
As you can easily get we reject with all the strength of our heart this position, since we do believe that it’s not a right but a serious duty of every parents to educate and teach her/his own kids. We due it to them.
So we have to learn out to teach. And our reflection here, and we do chose carefully this word, is like a mirror play because what we want to make clear is that we need to have a studying approach to every moment of life.
We tend to respond emotionally nowadays, also because we have been manipulated to believe that emotion is what we need. That a prompt response, lead by our heart, is what we need.
False!
While we do not underestimate the importance of feeling and emotionality, we want to point out the reason and will are the factors that makes a difference. So we need to apply them, take time (not waste time!), make efforts, study, ask, read, pray before taking a decision that could have profound impact on our life. And on the life of our kids.
How can we measure importance? By the consequences.
We should then be ready to consider all the details, to explain the rational behind our decisions.
It’s our duty

Teaching humility - Insegnare l'umiltà

Scroll down for English version - thanks!
Prossimo post/next post  Thursday/Giovedì  June 30th

Assolutamente no. Anzi.

We were so pleased by the comments and the readers of the two posts about “how to teach” (generosity and discipline) that we were trilled to complete the number with a third post: how to teach humility.
Do we really? Is that a value? A virtue? Isn’t the opposite of self-esteem which is one of the foundation suggested by psyco-something to promote one’s personality in this though world?
Not at all. On the contrary humility is a prerequisite for ambition and for self-esteem. At least the correct self-esteem, not pride which is a complete different stuff.
The ambitious must be humble, to learn continuously and thus reach the top he/she‘s striving for.
Humility is the foundation of all other virtues since it help find what can be improved. It’s the heart of wisdom.
How can we teach it?
Not by humbling our kids. That would be a disaster. That it’s really a direct attack to self-esteem.
We need to be at the same time coaches and referees: I mean being able to support and motivate our kids, while playing the role of the critics. A father, once said Scott Hahn, is always pleased and never satisfied. It seems to us a sharp and nice definition.
So support and build, without avoiding to point out mistakes and limits, not to blame, but to inspire.
And, we do really believe it, walking the talk. How can we do this? Learning self-irony. That’s the best way. Start laughing at yourself, at your mistakes, at your failure. Do not just raise monuments to celebrate your successes, do not even hide them, because you need to win the trust and esteem of your kids and show them that happiness through hard work can be reached –and happiness can be reach even when loyal hard work produces failures- and they can trust in life. But do not forget to point out your weaknesses and laugh at them, so to teach both humility and hope.
And do not forget to beg one’s pardon when required by the situation. That’s another way to teach humility. It works at every age in a perfect way, because it convey different important messages. And, by the way, connecting to the previous post: which messages?
Any further suggestions or comments?

The hidden messagge - Tra le righe

Scroll down for English version - thanks!
Prossimo post/next post  Tuesday/Martedì  June 28th

Lasciarlo scegliere
            cosa e quando magiare
            quando andare a dormire
mettere a posto stanza e giocattoli

We mentioned in our previous post the fact that we have not to forget that every deed convey to our kids a precise message which is far more important and profound that the deed itself.
The problem is that we are not always aware of these hidden messages. So let’s try to work on some example just to develop the insight approach, a sort of wide perception  that helps us to consider the consequences of our actions. We wrote a list last time, let’s start from there and decode some of those situations.
Allowing the kid to sleep in our bed à you are much more important that us, you are the center of the family and all of us must be ready to fulfill your will, what ever you desire. You can stand in the middle of the couple and reign over us. We are not capable to impose what we believe is good for you.
Let her/him chose
What he want to eat,
when she/he has to go to bed switching off the tv
when putting her/his toys in order

Let’ s consider all these situation together. The message actually is very similar. And very simple: we are confused about what is good for you. The dilemma: do what he/she wants or do what he/she needs is always solved in the same way: give the kid what he/she wants. Your will in stronger than ours.  And we do not what to fight to support what we believe should be done for your good. You are our master and king.

We will  discuss the other examples later on.
You may feel these interpretations are too strong and sharp. are they really? If you believe so please tell us why. If they are nothing more that the truth then what have we to do to help our kids?

Causa ed effetto - Cause and effect

Scroll down for English version - thanks!
Prossimo post/next post  Saturday/Sabato  June 25th

  • lasciarlo scegliere

  1.             cosa e quando magiare
  2.             quando andare a dormire
  3.             cosa e quanto vedere la tv
  4.             come vestirsi

Beh, sicuramente leggendo e studiando, d’accordo.

Life made us so focused on short term problems that we have lost insight in that cause-effect stuff.
Not blaming anyone of course. It happened. Unfortunately life does not forget it and we are suffering more and more the consequences of this unawareness.
Furthermore education is based on cause-effect: any decision we take shape the personality of our kids, from the very beginning. Any act of our life biases their life for ever.
This is something so true that we have to consider it every single second of our parenting life.
So what? Since we know that we are not perfect we should blame ourselves for all the mistakes, then harms, that we will cause to our kids?
Not at all. Unless we are voluntarily harm them, we cannot be blamed. But.
Yes there is a great but. Because ignorance is not an alibi. We cannot claim our good faith if we do nothing to learn more, to study, to consider what we are doing.
Life is so malicious that selfishness will dominate our action in such a subtle way that we could believe to be like Mother Teresa.
So we have to understand and consider profoundly which could be the consequences of simple decision like:
  • Allowing the kid to sleep in our bed
  • Let her/him chose

  1. what he want to eat,
  2. when she/he has to go to bed switching off the tv
  3. when putting her/his toys in order
  4. how to dress
  5. when get back home in the evening
  6. which books to read, which tv show

  • Leave him/her in front of the tv when we need “our time” while proclaiming that they should not watch too much tv
  • Do not walk the talk.

And many more.

How can we develop such an attitude so that we can easily understand the potential consequences of our decision?

We would suggest to read and study, it could be a solution. A simpler one is to consider that profound message hidden in any decision. As an example, could you find out these potential messages concealed in the previous list?

Could you help us to unveil them?

Interviewing Darah Zaledon (part II)

Here you can find the second part of the intriguing interview with  Darah Zeledon aka The Warrior Mom, whose official biography says:
“she is a wife, mom of 5, writer, fitness buff and thinker. Her unique voice reveals an intuitive and academic knowledge of the social sciences-- particularly psychology and sociology.  Deep introspection is oftentimes the catalyst for a great deal of her pieces. Her empowering messages are born from an appreciation and passion for life and a nonstop quest for truth, reflecting a wisdom earned by a diversity of life experiences. Despite it all, Darah’s personal favorites are the quirky anecdotes exposing the chaotic tug-of-war between motherhood and personal passions.
She’s currently working on her memoir---a tragic, yet inspiring story of the last five years of her life entitled: A Lucky Girl.

Which are the biggest mistakes families make nowadays?

People are too quick to surrender and throw it all away. Divorce rates continue to climb and parent-child communication is deteriorating further with each new wave of technology.  And in lieu of learning each others’ “language,” parents are easy to give up on their children and vice-versa.  And so the cycle begins where kids turn to the internet, to friends, to drugs, and parents also seek to anesthetize their troubles. Life is not easy and despite the media portraying it otherwise, we must work hard---day after day---to maintain our family united and happy.

Who or what is the worst enemy of families nowadays?

I believe the media is our worst enemy. From the time small children are able to watch television or browse the internet, they develop a warped perspective of what the “real world” is like. And from this erroneous vantage point, all ensuing notions of what is “normal” and “acceptable” are imagined.

From the comments that you receive in your blog, which are the subjects that families like the most? Are more interested in? Which are the issues they have to face?

Mothers are worried about not “measuring up” to society’s harsh standards, about maintaining a sense of self and balance once they are thrust into motherhood and frankly, are concerned about their children’s evolution. The myriad of stress parents’ face today is mounting. Parents need to cut themselves some slack and do the best they can. Parents need to rely more on their instincts and intuition and stop consulting with the so-called experts on everything. They need to trust themselves more, develop their own criteria. If you are careful to always act with good intentions and a pure heart, all the rest should fall into place. It is important to be insightful and have self-awareness in all you do. This almost always guarantees that each decision you make will be made conscientiously and therefore help you choose what’s “right.”

Can you give us three hints, three clues to raise a “happy family”?

  1. If married, a loving relationship between parents sets the foundation for everything else to come.
  2. Open, honest communication between siblings and between the parent and the child.
  3. Fun activities and downtime where the family can share “letting loose and being silly” together builds trust, confidence and intimacy. After all, as the saying goes: The family that plays together, stays together.
