Falta de Etica

Prossimo post Next post
Martedì/Tuesday  2 novembre

Scroll down for English version thanks

All’origine c’è la persona. Che è il cuore della società. Siamo noi.

In the beginning there is the person. Which is the heart of the society. It’s us. Anyone of us. And if we do not behave, nothing works.
During a meeting with Jorge Luis Borges, early Eighty, someone asked the writer which was the most significant feature of the present century. His answer was quick and sharp: “falta de etica”: lack of moral sense.
Thirty years later the situation worsened.
The Italian sociologist Giuseppe De Rita, in a recent interview, is even more pessimistic: “we are in the kingdom of pure instincts now, passions not ruled by the traditional norms. Therefore I can risk my life balconing just for a bet and I can with the same irresponsibility attack someone I don’t like or who offended me. I’m the only master of myself, of morality”.
Those parents with teenagers knows very well the pain of setting rules, to explain the value of these rules, of saying no, as many authors suggest (Asha Phillips; Giuliana Ukmar; Jesper Juul; Osvaldo Poli). We are in pain. Families are in pain.
We are often left alone in this fight for the future happiness of our kids. We have to fight against television, bad models, songs, bad friendships, media.
It is so relevant to find out reliable allies in this war.
Franca and I founded a great support in Faes, a parent association running three schools in Milan and supporting several others in Italy, connected to schools organizations all around the world, in the US too.
For us that has been a true winning experience: thanks to the support given from these schools to the development of our children, not just from a cultural point of view, but what is more important from a human point of view, thanks to a shared educational plan, it has been more difficult for us to show to our children the way that we believed was the best.
Now they are grown –the little one is eighteen- it’s up to them to make their choices. And we do not know which will be their path. Maybe the one we dislike.
What we have for sure is that Faes helped us in providing them a huge number of tools and elements that can help them in making the best choice. We believe this to be the most relevant duty of parents.
Which have been your allies in this battle?

Iniziamo dunque a versare. Facile?

Life is relations. No one can live without relationships. Maurice Nédoncelle, a French psychologist, wrote in is book Rèciprocité des consciences, essai sur la nature de la persone that no one can ignore the alternative «aut duo aut nemo»:  two or none. Saying this the French philosopher want to underline the real nature of the human being and the fact that any relation in nothing but a two persons link.
What Nédoncelle says is particularly true for the family, which is the cell of the community and the cradle of the society. And what builds and keeps a relationship alive is nothing but love, that means a personal toll-free care for the other person and her/his good.
Ok, we know that. Every one knows. This can be your reaction. I know. The point is to act this way not just to know it. Stephen Covey, a well know author, uses to say that to build a relation we need to make deposits into the "emotional bank account" of the other person: child, spouse, parents, relatives. And the reason is that eventually we will make withdrawal from those accounts and if we end up in the loss area, then problems can arise. And this is specially true with teens.
Which can then be deposits and withdrawals in the family?
Here some example of possible withdrawals:
  • Do not keep promises
  • The syndrome: “when you will be an adult you could do what I’m doing”
  • Don’t pay attention or listen
  • Put ourselves first
  • Impose one own’s will
And some example of potential deposits
  • Keep promises
  • Strive to walk the talk
  • Listen to other people even when we are tired or have an hectic agenda
  • Give priority to their desires
  • Motivate our decisions
  • Spend time with them

Let’s start with the deposits then! Easy to say. Much more difficult to do. Why? Because there is a further element we have to consider which is so influent it can twist our intention. Every one of us “speaks” his/her own language, a very different language pouring from the heart. Does everyone like any gift? Or compliments? Not at all.
That’s a problem. We do not just have to talk love, but we also have to talk love in the slang of the other person.
An Italian author, Giuseppe Pontiggia, put it in a wonderful way: “just say it with my words”.  This is the opposite a very common Italian idiom, used when you want to put at easy someone trying to explain something complicated: “just say it with your words”. We do not have to talk our words, but the other person’s one, Pontiggia suggested.
Now, that’s really hard! Lucky us, we can be guided by Gary Chapman who identified five love languages that are mostly used by everyone. Any of us talks rather one or two of these languages. And they are? Let’s talk about them in a future post.
At present, can you share with us the deposits that gave you the highest and quickest results?
Thanks!

Sempre.

    9.     Superpapà: questo è un lavoro per me. Il ruolo del padre nella famiglia moderna

    E contiamo sui vostri contributi.
Che ne dite? Siete dei nostri?

That’s the point: we learn it not only through books, studying but through experienceThe coupe comes first. Always. Even when the kid has the fever! Obviously within reason, with judgement
The reason why? because to build a happy/solid family requires a firm foundation: that of a solid, healthy couple
And the only way is to build your marriage on a solid and profound love.
Don’t be afraid: we re not going to bore you with homilies
about marital love or patience, the virtues that glue us together through both good times and bad. There is time to discuss this topic in the future.

What we want to claim right here is that in any situation the couple comes first: the priority is the husband-wife relation.
    * Of course this must be accomplished without damaging the children, but also without making such an exclusive relationship between parent and children that the spouse becomes neglected.

A difficult balance? * If it were easy, we wouldn't be here discussing this topic.

    * To help you understand, here is the structure of our blog and the subjects we will cover in the future
    * We have listed the subject topics below and would appreciate your imput and suggestions. Which topics do you prefer? What is missing? Which topics should be given priority?

    1.     Funny family blog: let’s laugh about ourselves
    2.     Interview with family experts
    3.     Don’t miss it: conferences, books, events that you cannot miss
    4.     What We Talk About When We Talk About Love: the five love languages suggested by Chapman
    5.     Venus vs Mars: acknowledge differences to become closer and better understand each other
    6.     Survive chilwood: when being parent is naked labor
    7.     The school years: striving to get order
    8.     Surviving teens: a tunnel which never ends
    9.     Wonderdaddy: the role of the father in modern family
    10.  Grandparents: a richness not just our families. When the extended family is a resource
We will discuss thes subjects in a detailed and professional manner, surfing the web to discover the best posts, articles and videos that will enrich our lives and relationships.
And we will welcome your thoughts too!
What do you think? You’re with us?
