What parents fear: facing risks - Che cosa gli potrà succedere? Le paure dei genitori

Next english post Wednesday May 2nd
Prossimo post mercoledì 2 maggio

Testo in italiano qui sotto - grazie

We start talking some post ago we talked about what parents fear.  To start going deeper let’s first list them again, as Mariolina Migliarese our favorit psychiatrist uses to define them, so that we could be able to understand better each of them

1)   we fear to make mistakes, to hurt our kids because we take wrong decisions
2)   we fear for their health: diseases, risks, wrong friends, wrong places…
3)   we fear to lose their love, their appreciation
4)   we fear to impose them our values, what we believe in
5)   we fear they can suffer in any way, especially frustration

Last week we discussed the fear to make mistakes so today we will face the second listed fear: that they could be hit by something terrible, they could fall ill, they can meet wrong people, the can be exposed to risks and so on.
In some way that is an healthy fear: it’s one of our duty to protect our kids and to teach them how to face the dangers that life & world will through against them.
And that’s precisely the point: we have to prepare them, teach them, train them to face life. Not manipulate life to prevent any potential risk.

It’s important to consider two main factors here, in my opinion:

First: we improve and get smarter only, or mainly, when we face issues and we are able to overcome them or to cope with the defeat. That’s the way people fortify their personality. To become stronger we need to face the unexpected and solve the problem. It help us to learn, therefore to make our reason brighter, and to reinforce our will.
Second: to learn how to face concerns we have first… to face some. It’s a on-the-job learning process. We need to have problem to solve to learn how to solve problems! So it’s our duty, as parents, to find out the best balance between protection from risks and exposition to dangers to toughen our children. We already talked about this in the post we wrote about Lenore Skenazy and the free range kid approach.

Let’s get back to our childhood: I know the world was much less dangerous than now (but then again: is this true? Was it really less risky or were the perils just different from now) and I know that the environment was really different from town to town from block to block, not to talk about different countries. But let’s remember: how did we learn what life was?

Making mistakes - Del commettere errori

Some post ago we talked about what parents fear.

They are listed in a sort of (il)logical way, being the fear to make mistake the “in the beginning…” terror that terrify and petrify a huge number of parents.
To overcome this frightening nightmare let’s start to consider why we are obsessed with that and which are the consequences of it.
We do love our kids, greatly: since when they are just born till… well… till the end. Our end. So we do not what to hurt them and since nowadays we are so fragile, oppressed by a lot of self-calling  experts that state what we have to do and claim what we don’t, we are very confused about dos and donts. Every decision seems to have a bad effect on our kids and hurt them.
So we prefer to give up: no decision seems better that hurting decision.

Actually it’s not.

Mariolina suggests to consider two main areas of reflection:
a)    consequences: kids could seem to be pleased by their parents’ inaction, but in reality they tend to consider this withdrawal as a clear sign of lack of love, absence of attachment. You do not want to risk for me, therefore you do not love.
b)   Are we intimately sure that we do not want to take decision because we do not what to risk to avoid hurting our kids? Couldn’t it be because we cannot resist without having their full and evident approval, which our decision could deny us? Why this? Because usually our decisions imply refusals, we have to say no. And we are afraid of losing their love, their appreciation. And this is a selfish fear.
Actually, loving and educating kids means being responsible for them, provide –and teach them to discover- what it’s good and what is right. We need therefore to take decision for them, we should not seek perfection, but hunt for their good.
What do you think about?

Amiamo i nostri fili. Sempre.

Next post Tuesday April 19th -
Prossimo post giovedì 19 aprile

Testo in italiano qui sotto - grazie

What do we fear? What are parents scared of? Mariolina Migliarese suggests that we are not able to be so firm as we should be as parents, standing steadily in front of our kids to show them the way, because we do fear to many things.
Let’s list them before discussing them one at the time in future posts, thanks also to your comments and hints.

It’s quite easy to understand that our parents and their parents and their parents (and so on) should fear similarly: so why do we act differently so that one can claim that nowadays what is changed are the kids but parents?
I believe that the founding fear is that we cannot withstand to lose, apparently, the love and respect of our kids, because we are no more aware of what love is and how it works.
We tend to mistake love for audience and success. That’s not love. That’s something completely different and much poorer than love. That’s just appearance.
We want everything and now, and we cannot delay satisfaction because we have been taught to feel and express and live lead by emotions. Which is not exactly what life is.
So, what do you think about?

Testo in italiano

I had the chance to attend to the unofficial presentation of the new book written by Mariolina Migliarese (by the way non-Italian friends: if you can in some way ease a translation and publication of her two books in your languages, please do not miss the opportunity to be able to read these wise texts). We were cosily sit in a wonderful sitting room in one of the smartest house in downtown Milano, in a familiar environment much more close to a friendly conversation in a mild night around the campfire than an austere conference in a cold congress room.
That’s why I took a lot of notes that will share to with you in the following weeks, being pretty sure there is a lot to learn and apply in what she said.
Let’s get started: the first hint I’d like to discuss how to regain the firmness required to educate our kids. Without assertiveness, an healthy one, there is no authoritativeness neither then education.
Parents suffer their lack of steadiness, they discover the pain caused by their shortage of firmness when they are not able to get what they want from the kids, and usually the conflict breaks out when the matter is really relevant.
Actually this is their fault, our fault. It’s one of those simple cases where the responsibility is easy to find and you risk no mistake in identifying who is to blame.
Essentially  we taught them to negotiate and impose their will in any situation almost since they were born: and they learnt it quickly and efficiently.
We tend to involve them in any decision of the family, from the beginning: “Jimmy are we going to grandma’s house today?  What you want to eat? Do you want to go to sleep now? Do you want to clear up your room?”
We are mistaking orders with advises, even worst: requests.
How do you think a two years old kid will answer to these questions? Is he really capable to understand the questions and the implications? Isn’t he still unable to dominate his passion?
Is he able to sort good from evil?
Now there is one situation when we do not ask or try to find commitment: when we walk on the road and our baby run away and try to cross the street putting himself in danger, then we discover what firmness is and what acting quickly and resolutely actually means.
Why that? Because we have a clear mind about is good for him.
That is the same kind of approach we need to apply in each and every situation.
What Mariolina suggests is that we fail our duty because today it’s not easy to be convinced of our actions. And that because we are afraid of many things.
Which ones in your opinions?

Testo in italiano

Cosa vuoi mangiare? Vuoi andare a dormire? Vuoi mettere in ordine la tua stanza? "
Senza sconti. Senza vacillare.
