Mastering time - Governare il tempo

We have to study: that’s important. Always keep this attitude: to improve, to deepen. Read books and much more: read reality, situations, facts. This is one of the duties parents have to consider. Especially in this dynamic world, as we have recently considered .
It was reading a new stimulating book, unfortunately not yet traduced in English (if you can read Italian here you can find more about) that we got the idea for today’s post.
Costanza in her book suggest that women, and particularly moms, tend to be overwhelmed with things to do, to take care of those they love, and sometime –let’s say often-they are so concentrated in what they are doing, so meticulously and quickly, lost the meaning of what they are doing.

That’s not just a moms’ problem by the way. Goldratt says that this is the main problem of management, which can be inducted by will of control and pressure of the elapsing time.

That’s why we would like to suggest and easy way to evaluate our deeds considering urgency and importance.
Now what? It that easy? Nothing new then. Perhaps. Or perhaps we can consider the true meaning of this words… from a mathematician point of view: we mean, which is the independent variable that determines the value of urgency and importance?
For urgency it’s easy: deadlines. And you can easily see deadlines: like an axe cutting our time.
But what about importance? Which is the independent variable determining importance?
Our suggestion: consequences. Something can be more or less important, relevant, following the consequences of action or inaction.
We have to stop and think before doing or not doing to understand which is the true vale of our efforts: does it worth them? We do believe this can help us and relieve our stress.
What do you think? What are you doing to master time?

Are digital kids different?

Giuseppe Romano and Stefania Garassini are two brillant journalist that should be included in the list of the first ones to study and wisely talk about the new technologies since the 80’s, with a special attention to the impact of videogames into the children’s and teens’ world.
Since we have discovered nowadays that the virtual world, the IT factor and the Internet have much more implications not just on our lives but even in the thinking structure of our kids, who have been defined the digital generation, it was natural to interview Giuseppe asking him to help us to develop more awareness, and we also hope wisdom, on understanding and dealing with this new situation, than can sometime frighten us so much to decline the job of mastering its influence in our kids’ education and life.

1)   Which is the goal of your blog Digital Kids?

In this blog we strive to provide clues and information to parents and teachers who, while  don’t feeling at easy dealing with the new languages inducted by the digital word, nonetheless are seriously committed to education.

2)   Do you really think digital kids are different from the previous generations?

Yes they are: dramatically in the way the learn. Till twenty years ago literacy was a gradual process, linear and leaded: nowadays it’s multicentre, self-controlled, and what is worst flooded by images and words targeted to adults.

3)   In which way videogames and the Net changed the way of thinking and even living of the kids?

Actually it’s happening: we do still have to measure and evaluate the effect of the “social countries” that are revealed in the social network, in the on-line world where you play and meet new guys, in the relations build and kept by smartphones.

4)   Videogames: are they an opportunity or a danger for education?

The true danger is ignorance: it could bring you both to prejudice and suspicion, than to an uncontrolled and unlimited acceptance. Another great danger is the solitude: the kids need someone near them to play with them. Then nothing can be dangerous. Having said that I should add that videogames can be manifolds and stimulating like books and movies can be. And they are interactive, so call you to be an hero and call to action.

5)   Does the digital world impact also the moral sphere, distorting the sense of truth?

It has strong and profound implication on the real life. It’s just an illusion the difference that someone uses to do between real life and virtual reality. Reality is just one and any action we perform follows us with its moral implications, with its burden: evil or good. We have a great responsibility for what we do and what we suffer in the Net. And we didn’t understand that, otherwise we won’t do something the usually we want consider totally unacceptable, like stealing (downloading film, games, software) or insulting, mystifying even being violent.

6)   Could you suggest us on line games, videogames or applications that families can trust and that even be an help to parents?

My preferit one: “art academy” for DS Nintendo. It’s a training on painting where you learn all the secret of art. The famous Brera Academy uses it to guide visitors and let them “walk into” the paintings. For other suggestion let me recommend to read frequently my blog Family game here: Family Game

7)   Could you prompt us your three best post on this subject ?

These are my four suggestions:

Money makes the world go round

2. Quanto e con quale frequenza?
3. Cosa possono comprarvi?
4. Cosa dovrebbe cambiare con la loro crescita?
5. Dobbiamo darla liberamente o come ricompensa per alcune attività o lavori svolti?
6. Dobbiamo controllare che cosa acquistano? Oppure saranno liberi di acquistare tutto?
7. Devono riferirci come la utilizzano?

We may have different issues to face in different part of the world, but what we have in common is how to teach the value and use of money to our kids.
We will really welcome your contribution to this post, because our aim is to build the “global guide to the use of money” thanks to your clues and experience.
We need to teach the value of money to our kids, from the very beginning, also because they represent nowadays the perfect target for adverting and sales: they are a reach segment, since parents and grandparents tend to satisfy every desire and caprice of their little children. And they tend to be upset quite quickly with what they got so that they can desire quite soon something else, something new.
While this process has devastating implications on self-control we want talk about that today. Just take out the lesson about money.
So, these are the questions that almost every family would like to find the answer to:
1.     When start giving pocket money to the kids?
2.     How much and how frequently?
3.     What they are supposed to buy with?
4.     What would change wile they grow?
5.     Do we have to give it for free or as a reward for some duties or jobs done?
6.     Do we have to control what they buy with? Or will they be free of buying everything?
7.     Do they have to report?
8.     In which way we can affect the way they use the money?
Any more questions to add?
Answers can be very different for young kids, teens, college students (in those countries where they are still at home depending from the family, like Italy) but the meaning of these answers should be the same. Just applied in a different situation.
What we personally strive to do is to create a sense of responsibility, and a sense of honor, if we can say so: money is just a mean, a tool to do something. Having said that, it’s a daily fight to understand how this can be applied. Should we buy that book which can be so relevant, but it’s now straightly necessary? Is this a way to prevent their desire thus creating confusion? Should they have to work to refund for the damage they have done at home or to a friend or should we do cover their mistakes? Should we do satisfy their dreams just because we could do it on a specific occasion (a trip overseas) that won’t be replayed soon?
How do you find answers to these questions? Which help could you give to this community? Which webpages have you found that can help us?

Genitori dinamici - Dynamic parents

Prossimo post Next post Giovedì/Thuesday 17 marzo 2011

Dobbiamo affrontare ogni giorno diverse prove. E dobbiamo essere pronti a farlo. Perché abbiamo responsabilità verso i nostri figli.
Come ragionano?
Siamo genitori, coniugi, dinamici? Quali sono le vostre esperienze? Cosa potreste suggerire?

Many challenges everyday: I believe this is the essential condition of a parent. We have to face daily several trials. And we have to be ready for them. Because we have responsibility toward our kids. Any test we fail will have consequences for them.
We know it very well, it’s dramatic and exciting at the same time.
Now I believe that the main challenge we have to face nowadays as parent is be ready to change staying stable.  Wait a minute: what I’m saying? Someone call it dynamic fidelity. We have to be firmly linked to our values and principles, the solid rock on which we have built our life and also our family, those irremissible values we believe in. And at the same time be ready to change and adapt rapidly to the situations, applying thus in new ways the neverending (and never changing) principles.
Readying books and magazine we discover daily new reliable study that are telling us that the manhood is changing, not in is dignity and nature, but in its constitution. Person 2.0? well, sort of. Brain studies show us very clearly that the digital generation uses its brain in very different way. Are we surprised or skeptical? Why this? Have not we be told since ever that human beings use their brain only for a fraction of its immense power? Now, digital kids are learning to use more of it or just a different part of it.
Do we know how they do learn, understand, decode reality and hug it? How they apply reasoning? How can we teach them and be an example if we do not know that? That’s why we will post in the next future some interview with experts of this science and other people, I’m thinking of Sarah Cook of RaisingCeoKids, that can help us understand this changes.
And what about the biological differences between women and men? It’s not just the subject of funny, and yet profound books, about Mars and Venus. It’s a reality that has been proven by accurate analysis on the different material, organization and chemistry of the brain.
Are we ready to change accordingly to overcome our limits and be more sensitive to our spouse requirements?
Because in the end everything is based on our way of loving, our capacity of loving, of find the best way to love our spouse, our kids, they way they want to be loved, and having in mind the sole goal of love: becoming better and better together day after day.

Are we dynamic parents, spouses? Which are your experiences? What could you suggest?

The family's constraint - Limita' vò cercando ch'è sì cara

Quali benefici potreste ricavarne?

English version

Life is a whole: even if we try we cannot built waterproof partitions. That’s why very often management approaches are based on common sense and daily life intuition and experience and that’s why we can learn from management approaches to improve our family situation.
We already mentioned the Theory of Constraints when we talked about education. We’d like to suggest the TOC approach also to better run our family.
There are five focusing steps in the TOC approach, and we believe that these can represent a sharp guidelines for our daily family life.
We believe it can be very useful because it compel us to focus on the major point, while usually –we know by experience- families and especially moms, tend to act like firemen chasing all the hotbed with the same intensity and efforts.
Let’s check together starting from Goldratt’s original enunciation
1.              Identify the constraint (the resource or policy that prevents the organization from obtaining more of the goal)
2.              Decide how to exploit the constraint (get the most capacity out of the constrained process)
3.              Subordinate all other processes to above decision (align the whole system or organization to support the decision made above)
4.              Elevate the constraint (make other major changes needed to break the constraint)
5.              If, as a result of these steps, the constraint has moved, return to Step 1. Don't let inertia become the constraint
And now let’s adapt them to the family situation

1.     Identify the constraint (what is causing pain to the family? What is hurting us, preventing us from being more happy and serene and more… an healthy family?)
2.     Decide how to exploit the constraint (let’s focus on this problem, let’s consider the specific situation, or person, as central in our life and let’s define a way to valorize it and see the positive side of it)
3.     Subordinate all other processes to above decision (that should be our priority: what we have to change in our family to focus mainly in the solution of that problem?)
4.     Elevate the constraint (let’s do our best to help that family member to solve her/his problem or handle the situation and once we solved it… )
5.     If, as a result of these steps, the constraint has moved, return to Step 1. Don't let inertia become the constraint (…do we believe we have solved all our family problem? Not at all… go back to square one!)

What do you believe: could this approach be useful for your family? Did you apply it or something similar? Which cold be the benefit we get out of it?
