Leah Derewicz
Scroll down for English version

The creativiy of women and moms is so rich that the world cannot but welcome it. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. We discussed several time the challenges and frustrations women have to face in the business environment. This is why we always greet the opportunity to share experience of moms that has found an alternative way to work while staying closer to their children. Our intent in this case is doublefolded: share with you their experience as mom, and blogger mom thus having a special window on the society, and present the story of a successful entrepreneur that could provide clues and cues to launch a new business adventure.
Leah Derewicz now is a SAHM (Stay At Home Mom) with 2 beautiful boys, one Cocker Spaniel and an husband, that she defines lovely. And we believe her! They had lived in Poland for almost 2 years, and upon returning to the States, Leah purchased a full set of Polish Pottery dinnerware to bring home. That was the trigging idea for a complete new opportunity. When 2 years, Leah was itching to use some of her creativity and sales talent, without living up to be a stay at home mom. After researching many franchise and direct sales options, nothing really grabbed her attention … maybe she should start selling the Polish Pottery. Leah contacted a woman in Poland and started internet research and as they say "the rest is history". A few months after that conversation, Peacock Pottery was brought to life in November 2005, with the website going live in January 2006.
1. You are a work at home mom: why you made this choice, which are the advantages of your choice?
My husband and I are "mid-life parents" We were very fortunate to be raised by Stay at Home Mothers and that is what we wanted for our boys as well. For me personally, this is the best choice, I get to stay at home with the boys and work at home - truly the best of both worlds! I love, love, love being a stay at home mom. I love spending time playing, reading, gardening, cooking, crafting etc. with my boys. I am able to volunteer at our oldest son's school. Being that my business is mostly Internet based, I am able to write articles, market the business, package items for shipping around the boys schedules.
2. How difficult it was to create your own business?
When our oldest son turned two - I was looking for a creative outlet. I started researching franchises, direct sales models etc. but I couldn't find anything I was passionate about. While we lived in Poland, we purchased a set of the Boleslawiec Polish Pottery dinnerware and I LOVED it! So I researched Polish Pottery in Arizona and couldn't find anyone that was selling it either in a store or via the Internet. I have a background in retail and marketing, retail has been a lifelong passion of mine. I contacted two people, a friend from Poland to see if we could work together and a wholesaler who shared the same Christian values that I did. I created the name "Peacock Pottery" and as they say the rest is history. During this time I have learned about websites, blogs, Facebook, Twitter etc. I have made mistakes and learned from them and am watching the business rebound beautifully and grow into my dream vision.
3. which kind of families do usually contact you and your blog?
As I mentioned before, my business has changed with the introduction of Facebook and Twitter. These vehicles introduce a whole new market to Polish Pottery. When a potential customer looks at the shopping site, they may surprised because Polish Pottery is more expensive than your everyday dinnerware items. This is where my blog is a great resource, I am showing potential customers how Polish Pottery can be used in your everyday life, I have family friendly recipes and will continue to add more weekly. I also include stories about our time in Warsaw and I will be adding more stories about how important family life is in Poland in the new year.
4. which kind of concerns do you usually perceive in the families in the US?
Time - In my view, families in the US don't spend enough quality family time together. While in Europe, I loved Sundays, I would often see generations of families strolling through the park, sharing ice cream, feeding the birds - just spending time together. I don't see that here- I see families rushing from one activity to the next; rushing while grocery shopping; rushing while on the road - trying to cram everything into a weekend - leaving kids exhausted but not necessarily fulfilled.
Perfection - In the US there is a "Want to keep up with the Jones" problem. We want everything to be perfect, the perfect spouse, the perfect house, the perfect kids. We are sometimes so busy trying to keep up appearances, that we lose sight of what is really important - nurturing a strong self - esteem in our children, building a strong family foundation.
5. you spent a couple of years in Europe: did you perceive differences in education?
Wow, the biggest difference is language skills. Everyone I met knew multiple languages, even the children. While I struggled trying to learn enough Polish to order in restaurants! The children are very knowledgeable about world politics. Education is so important in Europe, I wish the US would put more emphasis on education.
6. three suggestion you can give as a parents to our reader to be a better family
1. Time - Take the time to enjoy your children - eat a snack with them, play a game with them, talk with them daily - laugh with them. Make them feel important and valued.
2. Stop trying to be perfect - Tell yourself that it is okay not to be perfect, one of the best things to teach a child is that it is normal to make mistakes, but that we learn from them and move on. Laugh when the cookies you baked don't look like "Martha Stewarts" , just enjoy instead of stressing over perfection.
3. Traditions - Building traditions and memories are so important for children to feel like they belong. Make your own traditions - if it is going to church on Christmas Eve - then make sure it happens every year no matter where you are - these traditions will stay with your children for a lifetime. I wrote an article on this subject.

3. Ascoltate davvero i vostri figli.

Rebecca is an example of the work-at-home-moms you can find on the web. It's a interesting alternative for those mothers that want to share their creativity in a business environment while staying close to their kids. We discussed it previously on famigliefelici where several moms left powerful comments.
In our chat with Rebecca we tried not just to discuss the parenting side of her activity but to develop the entrepreneur one so to provide clues and ideas to our readers.
Just before listening to what Rebecca said, let's remember that we already met and interviewed a web-mom: Shara Lawrence-Weiss
You are a work at home mom: why did you make this choice, what are the advantages of your choice?
"Shortly after the birth of my first son I was laid off from work. I had a background in marketing and rather than go back to a traditional 9-5 job, I decided to work from home and start my own business as a Marketing Consultant. This allowed more flexibility in my schedule and the ability to spend more time with my son. After the birth of my second son, and my oldest son now two years old, I found it more difficult to balance my work/home life, but I continued to work as a consultant for another four years. During this time I realized while I was in a career that allowed some use of my creativity, I was not following the passion that I had for crafts and working with my hands. It was at that point that I stopped taking any new marketing clients and focused solely on the startup of my company Freckles Crafts! While it has been a lot of hard work, the benefits of owning my own company have been amazing. Not only do I get to do something that I love every single day, it is a wonderful feeling to know my craft kits are bringing so much joy to kids and assist in making the crafting experience an enjoyable one for parents. Being my own boss, working from home (in PJ’s if I like!), and having a flexible schedule that allows me to have more family time and be available when my kids need me are just icing on the cake!"
How difficult was it to create your own business?
"It took me nearly a year to get Freckles Crafts off the ground. I had absolutely no retail business experience, so it was quite a challenge for me to figure out where to begin. I spent hours and hours researching packaging options, safety regulations of products for kids, vendors from whom I could purchase high quality and safe supplies, shipping options and various pricing structures for my products. I also had to get very creative with my marketing budget, and traditional forms of advertising (i.e. print, radio, etc.) were not going to fit into the early stages of my marketing plan. While I had been in marketing for years, social media was never my area of expertise as most of my clients focused on print media. I had to quickly learn the ropes of Facebook and Twitter and also how to start blogging! While it was very difficult and overwhelming at times, I feel as though taking my time to really study each area of my business has made me more successful in running my company. I feel very proud of everything I have accomplished since the launch of my company in March of 2010 and I look forward to what the future holds for Freckles Crafts".
Which kinds of families usually contact you and your blog?
"My craft kits are designed for busy parents of children ages three and older who would like to craft with their children but may not have the time to search out all of the supplies needed to create each craft or who may be overwhelmed by the idea of having to come up with a craft idea to make. I find a lot of the visitors to my website are parents and grandparents who are looking for something convenient to keep on hand and be able to pull out at a moment’s notice. I also have a newly released blog where parents can get free craft tutorials, recipes, and creative inspiration for those occasions when they may have more time to plan creative activities for their children. Recently I have seen an increase in sales to parents who are purchasing craft kits for birthday parties as an on hand activity and/or in lieu of goody bags!"
In which way do you believe crafts can help a child’s development?
"Crafting is an important part of a child’s healthy development, and by encouraging your kid’s creativity you are helping to build a wide range of life skills. Not only are crafts great for building fine motor skills and visual, spatial development (i.e. working with scissors, stringing beads, drawing), but crafting can also improve a child’s skills in planning and completion of tasks, concentration, and imagination. Crafts are also very important in assisting with social development, as well as a feeling of success and self worth!"
What do you perceive as concerns for US families?
"Unfortunately I think the average US family has a lot of concerns right now; the economy, job loss, and decline in property values just to name a few. With that said, I feel that one of the biggest concerns among families today is education. Many of our nation's public schools are falling behind in the areas of literacy, math and science. The US is not able to keep up with other countries in academics, and the fear is that our children will not be able to compete in a global marketplace in the future. I believe many parents are deciding to take their children’s education into their own hands by choosing to home school rather than send their children to public school. I work with a lot of parents of homeschooled children who purchase craft kits to use as part of their lesson plans in the subjects of literacy, math and home economics. In addition, they are using the craft kits to teach an arts and crafts component to enrich their child’s education, one of the many benefits of homeschooling as art programs are continuing to be cut in public schools due to budget constraints.
It is going to take a lot of work to change the education system in this country and while there is a movement working toward reform, unfortunately it is going to be a long process and not fast enough for so many of the children who are currently in school".
As a parent, what are three suggestions you can give to our readers on how to be a better family
"1. Have fun with your family! Make a weekly family date. In an age where most families have both parents working outside of the home and kids participating in multiple extracurricular activities, it is important for families to spend quality time together. The key to achieving this is to set a family date night once a week. This night is non-negotiable, is reserved only for family members, and nothing else should be scheduled during this time. It is important to find activities that all family members enjoy and it is important to get your kids input so they feel included in the decision making. Spending quality time together will allow everyone to reconnect and keep the lines of communication open between parents and children.
2. Make children a priority but not your entire life. I think as parents we give so much to our children that we often lose touch with ourselves and what makes us happy. Taking time for yourself or with your spouse will not only make you happy but will also help to make you a better parent. If you don’t nourish yourself then you will not have as much to give your children.
3. Really listen to your children. Children want to feel like they have a voice in the family and when they feel like they are not being heard frustration can build and unnecessary arguments can occur. Even the youngest of children can communicate through sound, touch, eye contact, hand motions and sign language".
