Insight from TV - L'uso dei film nell'educazione

Scroll down for English version - thanks!
Prossimo post/next post Venerdì/Friday  September 16th

E, a proposito, avete qualche suggerimento? I vostri consigli saranno ben accetti.

There is one feature that parents should develop: the ability to analyze facts and behaviors going behind the obvious so to read every situation and be ready to act accordingly for the good of our spouse, our children and, why not, our friends.
It is called insight. It cannot be learned by reading wide books. It has to be developed through observation.
In these last years we have been asked to share this approach with several couples through seminars and courses based on the observation and analysis of movies and tv serial so that we can work out even the most complex situation in a protect environment, a sort of laboratories where parents can learn out to go behind the surface.
We used several movies and TV series, and we would like to share our liking for two of them which we believe should considered by every parent. We found them very useful and wise and, even though we cannot accept and agree with everything you can see in them, they represent a very powerful tool to develop such an attitude.
Parenthood is the first one: it’s the life of five families, the Zeek and Camilla Braverman and their four children’s ones.
The middle is the second one, talking about the life of Mike and Frankie Heck and their three kids.
Both are very helpful and we recommend to watch them and use them to improve your insight.
And, by the way, do you have any suggestions? Other movies or tv series that can be a resource for parents? We will welcome your hints!

Senza autorità - Authorityless

Scroll down for English version - thanks!
Prossimo post/next post Martedì/Tuesday  September 13th

We are puzzled and interested by several articles published by Italian newspapers and magazine about facts that pertains to kids and their parents.
The core of these facts is almost the same and can be summarized this way:
Kids did something wrong, sometime even illegal –smudging walls with paints claiming this is a new form of art as an example- and their parents solve the problem personally to protect their children –personally washing the walls to remove the patch, as an example.
This is just a symptom of a dreadful disease that is infecting our society. Unfortunately since it’s not possible to clearly see the consequences of such behaviors, but just perceive them, it seems that only few people are aware of the dangers we are facing and those unlucky people are often mocked and treated like a modern Cassandra.
The virus can be described as a “authorityless” or lack of authority. Parents prefer to decline their duty and their right too and bow in front of the strong desire of their kids.
They are acting as anything that can deflect from their kids’ desire could be described as a major attempt against their good. They should not be harmed in any way by anything going again their will, their pleasure.
They soiled a house wall or a monument? They were only trying to have some fun, they are kids so why bother them?
Parents seems so blind to have lost all the capability of reasoning.
Now, why that happened?
We do not have answers, and neither we can answer to what we have to do.
This post is a sort of pleading: what could we do to fight this infection?
We do strongly believe that it’s no more enough to try to handle this problem in our family: we are called by the love for the society to do something, to act promptly. But…. how?
Could you be so kind to share with us your suggestions and thoughts?
They will be more welcomed than ever.

Amicizia in famiglia - What is friendship?

Scroll down for English version - thanks!
Prossimo post/next post Sabato/Saturday  September 10th

Facciamo cose insieme: giocare a tennis, a baseball, correre, nuotare, sciare, praticare hobby, fare shopping.
q Prendersi un momento per una pausa pranzo tra tutti gli appuntamenti della loro fitta agenda ;
q Scrivere email e utilizzare Skype per collegarsi mentre si è lontani da casa, magari all’estero;
q Invitare i figli, uno alla volta, a cena fuori per una pizza o per un happy hour al mese (non dite che non avete tempo!);

What is friendship? In a family I mean. Should parents and kids be friends? In which way?
Friendship is a virtue and like every other virtue it is sided by two different vices: hostility (deficiency) and complicity (excess).
Now it seems that in our days friendship is something more close to complicity that to what it should really be.
Friendship actually should be the relationship between two people who support each other to improve and strive toward the good.
Is that a kind of relationship that could link parents and kids?
Yes it is, providing we agree that while friendship outside the parents-kids case is necessary based on equality, in our situation this cannot apply.
Parents can be friends of their kids but they will always remain parents. That means they will have more power? They will always have more responsibility and the duty to educate, which means that in some case they should apply power, a power which should necessary be wrapped with justice and love.
Now how can we raise such a friendship with our kids?
Let’s start doing things together: play tennis, baseball, running, swimming, skiing, practice hobbies,  shopping. Anything came to your mind that can help them trust you, esteem you and start discovering it’s fun and valuable talk to you and rely on your suggestions.
As they grow and become teens or even young adults, do not preach, rather suggest and also ask for their suggestions.
And find out ways to meet them even if you are a top manager and you spend a lotmof time working or out of town.
Friends of us solved this problem in quaint ways:
q taking appointments in their hectic agenda (actually it was his secretary) for a lunch break
q writing emails and Skype connecting while being far from home, maybe abroad
q invite them, one by one, to dinner for a pizza or na happy hour one a month (don’t tell me you can’t make it!)
q spend a weekend together on some special occasion (birthdays for example)
What are you doing to promote your friendship with your kids? Which suggestions can you give us?

Siamo pratici - Does & Donts

Scroll down for English version - thanks!
Prossimo post/next post Mercoledì/Thursday  September 7th

q Portare pesi per loro: cartella di scuola, gli sci, zaini e così via;
q Combattere le loro battaglie: meglio lasciarli provare e fallire prima di farlo per loro (vestirsi/svestirsi, allacciare/slacciare vestiti, cucinare, riparare..);
q Lasciare a loro il comando: decidere quando e cosa mangiare a pranzo/cena, quando guardare la TV, quando andare a letto;
q Correre ad aiutarli non appena iniziano a piangere;
q Supportarli in ogni disputa (contro gli insegnanti per esempio) solo perché sono i nostri bambini, li riteniamo svegli e dovrebbero essere protetti dal mondo cattivo,  particolarmente quando…… sono proprio dalla parte del torto;
q Sostenere le loro debolezze o i loro vizi;
q Incoraggiarli continuamente;
q  Fargli credere che siano i migliori al mondo;
q Farli sempre vincere quando giochiamo insieme;

Fare
q Insegnar loro cosa significhi la pazienza in molte situazioni: aspettare che un desiderio si avveri, ed essere capaci di sopportare le altre persone;
q Dar loro un lavoro/incarico con il quale possano capire cosa significhi fare qualcosa per la famiglia;
q  Considerarli responsabili dei loro doveri e comportarsi da giudice corretto quando non si comportano come ci si aspetta facciano;
q Lasciare che ci aiutino;
q Rimproverarli quando non si comportano bene;
q Insegnar loro cosa sia l’umorismo e fargli capire che la prima e l’unica persona che possono prendere in giro è se stessi, con gli altri è meglio una blanda ironia ed è da evitare il duro sarcasmo;
q Vincere contro di loro così posso imparare cosa significhi perdere (calcio, tennis, ping pong, scacchi…)
q Porre loro delle sfide e agire di conseguenza dopo il risultato;
q Incoraggiarli quando stanno facendo qualcosa di corretto;
q Sostenerli quando se lo meritano.
Cosa si può aggiungere a questa lista? Che cosa avete sperimentato funzioni?

We are parents and we do not need too much talking and theories. We want, and need, practical suggestions. Tell us what we have to do! Ok, we need to know why we have to.
Now, in the last two posts we discussed about the reasons why we do have to avoid clearing the path to our kids. Now let’s talk about how we can do this. So here a couple of bullet points lists the we have collected by experience and through studies that we want to share with you so that you can add on to help all of us to be more effective and more righteous.
Don’ts
q Carry weights for them: the school bag, the skies, the backpack and so on.
q Fight their battles: let them try and fail before do for them (dress/undress, button up and unbutton, cook, repair..)
q Let them be in command: decide when and what have for lunch/dinner, watch the TV, go to bed…
q Run to their help as soon as they start crying
q Tell them “bravo!” for any stupid thing they did, especially when the best cheer should be “what the hell have you done?!”
q Support them in any dispute (against the school teachers for example) only because they are your cute kids and they should be protected against the wicked world and especially when they are totally wrong
q Encourage their weaknesses or even vices
q Cheer them continuously
q  Make them believe they are the best in the world
q Make them always win when playing
q Don’t moan and curse: show them challenges and difficulties can be faced in a positive way, with fun.
q Don’t let them believe you are focused only on the contrariness that cross your day

Do’s
q make them learn what patience means in many ways: wait till the satisfaction of a desire and be able to bear other people
q give them a job that will teach them how they can contribute to the family’s life
q  consider them responsible for their duties and act as a righteous judge when they do not perform as expected
q let them help you
q scold them when they do not behave
q teach them what humor is and that the first and only person you should laugh at is yourself
q beat them so that they can learn what losing means (football, tennis, table tennis, chess….)
q challenge them and act accordingly to the results
q cheer them when they do something well
q support them when they deserve it
What could you add to this list?

L'equilibrio difficile - The challenging balance

Scroll down for English version - thanks!
Prossimo post/next post Venerdì/Friday September 2nd

English version

I personally believe that all, or most of, the challenges parents have to face could be wrapped up in one single core problem: we have to find out the sole balance between two mistakes.
The politically correctness approach, that is polluting our age, far from helping us is causing a lot of heavy consequences to our families.
We could discuss for hours about the true meaning of happiness, what it is truly and how can we teach it to our kids. I do believe though that just few would insist in saying that happiness can be gained without pain and efforts. Do you remember the old saying no pain no gain?
 So why do we not act accordingly?
In this wonderful article appeared on the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera in august –unfortunately it was written and printed just in Italian-  Federica Mormando points out the inconsistent behaviors of parents who believe that happiness means to keep away all potential sorrows, pains, failures, defeats, even boredom  from their kids life.
We all know that this is not just a useless job, but indeed very stupid and dangerous one. Because life bites and hurts and if you are not ready for that, you will suffer much more and that will cause, as we see unfortunately much often now, devastating consequences.
What should we do then? How can we find the balance between inflicting or allowing useless suffering and preventing all the trial that are on the contrary useful to build strong personalities?
We think we have to expose our kids to life, make they learn what life means the hard way. Test themselves and put them to trial which are a inch tougher than they are  used to withstand.
As someone once said do not prepare the path for your kids, but your kids for their paths.
What does this mean specifically?
Don’t fulfill all their desire immediately or even before they even ask for; put targets and define jobs and results to be achieved before they could get what they dream of.
Let them discover boredom and find a way to overcome it.
Let them discover what fatigue is, let them make up their bed, clean their room, repair their bicycle and so on.
What else you could suggest from your own experience? What could be done or should be avoided to help them?
