Reblog: the best post retweeted for you

Annie Fox, M.Ed.

Adesso è l'unico tempo a nostra disposizione."

Annie Fox, M.Ed. is a respected educator, award-winning author, and a trusted online adviser. Her life’s work is helping teens become more self-aware, self-confident and better able to make choices that reflect who they really are.

1. You're an experienced educator, caring for the family: can you tell us something about you and your work?

"I'm a writer who has a talent for communicating with tweens and teens. I'm a great listener. In my work, I model active listening skills. I help young people  understand themselves better so they can recognize what they need in a friendship or in a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship or in their relationships with their parents. I help them sort through their barriers to communication and, hopefully, provide them with the tools to build the self-confidence to EXPRESS themselves honestly and responsibily. I also work with parents and teachers. It's always my goal to help bridge the communication and compassion gap between young people and the important adults in their lives. I do this through answering email questions from around the world (which I've been doing since 1997), as well as through my blogtwitterFacebook, as well as public speaking".

2. When and why you start your blog? In which way you believe this can help parents and teens?

"I started blogging in July 2008... relatively recently. Though for the four years prior to that, I published a free monthly parenting eNewsletter. The news letter was a great resource for parents but putting it together every month was very time consuming (especially for my husband who is my Tech Guy). Also, I found that I had things I wanted to write about more frequently than once a month. That's when I switched to blogging and I absolutely love the immediacy of the writing and of the responses I get to it. I've currently got 17,000 twitter followers so when I post a new blog I get immediate feedback. For a writer who's interested in family dynamics, social trends in parenting, social and emotional development of kids... this is fabulous!"

3. Which are the most frequent subject you end up posting in your blog? and why?

"Parent-teen communication issues are a huge topic because they affects so much of a young person's development as he/she moves toward adulthood. Included in the topic are trust issues, the setting of clear expectations and the transmission of values and standards from one generation to another. Another thing I find fascinating is how the communication style of the parent serves as a model of behavior and a model of parenting (for better or for worse). So, for example, if you're growing up with a parent who really only initiates conversation with you when they're finding fault with something you've done then the child/teen is getting a regular dose of negative feedback. This is highly likely to a) affect the child's sense of self-worth,  b) influence the manner in which the child behaves within peer relationship and c) color the type of parent this child becomes years from now with his/her own children. So, for me... it's all about communication and the emotional and learned barriers to doing it effectively".

4. What you can tell about families and teens from the perspective of your blog? Which are the post that seems to interested the most your readers and why in your opinion?
"In October I wrote a blog in response to a very public teen suicide triggered by a cyberbullying event. The piece, called "Broken Kids Are Breaking All of US" was about how many kids in their actions online seem to show a marked lack of empathy. That's so worrisome!  To date, over 13000 people have read that post! I think it struck such a chord because of the rash of teen suicides linked to bullying. What's at the heart of those tragedies is the apparent desensitization of kids who use social media. Many of them truly don't think that cyber-bullying is any "big deal." And they don't seem to connect the dots when it comes to their harassing behavior and the desperation of their victims".

5. Which are the main issues families have to face nowadays?
"Making the time to BE a family in the best sense of the word. The 21st century is delivering many challenging to well-meaning parents. Moms and dads are stressed, worried about jobs, bills, money, their kids' future. They're very busy and that busy-ness keeps them from connecting with their kids and with each other. Kids in this country are also stretched and stressed with school and pressure to fit in socially. Bottom line is that too many parents do not have (or do not make) relaxed time to spend with their kids".

6. Which are the three suggestions you can give to families to be better ones?
"Have dinner together with your kids at least 4 times a week. Unplug from social media during dinner. RELAX. Look each other in the eye and talk from the heart. laugh together. Play games. Take walks. Enjoy the time together. It's a cliche to say that "Kids grow up so fast!" but it's the truth. You don't have forever to be the kind of parent you want to be. Now's the only time you've got".
