Nessuna fiducia per la scuola? - Is there a reason for homeschooling

Come rispondereste?

It is a major problem. And we can’t solve it in few lines. But we can launch some ideas and collect your opinion and suggestions.
That is the questions:  which is the role of the school and what should we expect from the school?
Thanks to twitter I came in contact with several associations of homeschooling parents  (it’s the case for example of Richele  @RicheleMcFarlin). In those countries where this solution is allowed, several families chose to provide directly the school education required to their children. Why this? Because they do not trust the school.
I believe two are the main problems that we should consider, the source of this distrust, which is by the way present also in those other countries where homeschooling is not allowed:

1.     Distrust on the quality of education: my children can’t learn what they deserve to
2.     Distrust on the content of the teaching: this is not what I want my children learn

And we are not talking of Napoleon’s winning battles or the density of the atmosphere on Saturn, as you can easily guess.
Thus quality of teaching and quality of contents. I would say alignment of contents to our value.
I believe we as parents have to work hard on this and don’t make discount: yes, we’ve got much more problems with daily life, we face daily conflicts with children, why we should fight against them for choosing the school?
This can be a the point: we do not give too much relevance to this pick.
But. There is a big but as you can imagine.
Have we ever considered the consequences of this non-choice? Have we considered that this choice will influence heavily our children’s future? Have we judged the impact and the influence that a teaching can have on our children’s future?
I think this is why many parents are nowadays more and more involved in managing education systems: to grant their children the foundation values they want them to have.
In these years we are working with two different schools or better say institution: one in Italy, Faes, and the other one in Lugano, Swiss. This last one it’s a brand new project which is not even a school but much more: a way to side young boys and bring them to the final high school exam having worked not just with the best new media and professors on the quality of their knowledge, but having supported the families to provide them the required wisdom. What Faes is doing on a large scale, and with different means, since 1974, Everest, this is the name of the Swiss project, will be doing starting from September 2011.
Now my questions for you is that one: are this issue reasonable and relevant or not? How did you answered them? Homeschooling reader, can you help us know more about your way of educating children?

- una struttura accogliente e allegra;
- la possibilità del tempo pieno, che qui al sud non é affatto scontata;
- last but not least, l'aspetto economico, che di questi tempi non è da sottovalutare;

Hi! First, thank you for the mention. Second, I would like to briefly address your post. It must seem an odd choice to homeschool to those living in countries where this is not legal. In fact, the choice to homeschool is considered odd by many in my country (USA). So why homeschool? Is it distrust of the school system?

In America, many parents choose to homeschool due to the distrust of the school system to the simple choice of wanting to be a homeschooling family. It is not always a commentary on the state of the schools but that of the heart and lifestyle of the family. Some homeschool based on religious conviction, some based on poor school systems, some because a parent travels extensively for a job so the family tags along, etc. Surely, the most popular reasons tend to be religious conviction and distrust of the schools.

Why distrust?

Well, I'm sure you are no stranger to America's low rankings worldwide in math and science. I love my country but we are failing in our school systems in many areas. We have many excellent schools which are public and private. However, many schools in middle to low income areas are struggling. If I were to send my children to school the only public schools are barely able to keep their heads above water academically. I do not trust a system which claims superiority in education yet fails in its goals. Would you?

Many also distrust what the teachers will teach during class time. Many school systems dictate when to teach sex education and how to teach sex education. Teachers will teach evolution as fact. Secular humanism is all you find traveling the halls of public schools. Issues are taught in schools that are political with the intent to indoctrinate into a way of thinking contrary to Christian thought. Does this only affect Christians? Directly yes...but overall it will affect all students in due time.

In addition, the public school system serves the average student best. Advanced students of those with learning issues are not able to be addressed effectively. This is NOT across the board. Many teachers and school systems are excellent. However, parents are taking things in their own hands when the school systems fail or budgets are cut.

Why don't parents form a coalition and improve schools alongside teachers?

What a novel idea that many would jump at the chance for! I am not anti-school or anti-teacher. I love education and have the highest respect for teachers. Many are excellent. In fact, my son just started taking online classes and I love his teacher and trust her completely. Many private schools are open to parental involvement and some even require it. However, the public school system is a bit trickier. Public schools are not always open to parental involvement when it comes to academics. Now, there are good reasons for that so I don't blame them entirely. In addition, school budget cuts make it difficult to start new programs.

In conclusion, homeschooling is not always a commentary on the quality of the school system. Yet, many do make this choice based on issues with the school system such as quality or distrust or both. Homeschooling is a valid choice for educating a child. Homeschooled children on average score higher on tests than schooled children and perform just as well if not better in college. The homeschool child is not suffering for a quality education or social situation.

Thanks a lot for your detailed comment. And for having shared with us a view of a world far away from many if us: US visitors, following to blogger stats, are about 15% of the readers so it has been a great gifts yours!
Actually Faes, and in some way Everest too, are schools founded by parents a with a large commitment and involvement of parents in the managing of them.
It's not an easy way though: Everest is more similar to homeschooling.
By the way I discovered thanks to you and this post, that homeschooling is a viable way in Italy too, it could be allowed but it's not at all known.
Thank again!

Richele McFarlin ha detto...

I think America needs to be more unified in the educational needs of children. There is far too much conflict between teachers and homeschoolers. Teachers feel insulted that parents take on teaching. Parents seem to blame teachers for a failing school system. More cooperation would help everyone! Yet, we are a long way off from that in every school district. There are pockets of schools that are successful with such cooperation. We also need to teach children to deal with a global society. Most Americans only speak English...as you see I had to type in English. :)

grazie ciao
